Clinical Need

Currently, over 230,000 osteoporosis related fractures occur each year in the UK. Recent trends suggest hip fracture rates will increase to 117,000 by 2016. The combined cost of hospital and social care for these patients’ amounts to more than £1.73 billion per year in the UK alone.

Therefore, there is an on-going major shift from tissue repair to tissue regeneration as a solution to the ever-growing need for long-term orthopaedic care.*

Our Vision

The vision for this technology is to totally transform current treatment for osteoporosis especially for elderly people at risk of fracture. This would involve a simple CT scan to identify regions of resorbed bone. Stem cell incorporated porous calcium phosphate microspheres would then be injected directly to the sites at risk of fracture via a minimally invasive day case treatment procedure.

Our Aim

Is to scale-up the development of these novel porous calcium phosphate glass microspheres which would ‘repair’ the bone tissue (via release of CaP ions from the resorbing microspheres) and ‘regenerate’ bone tissue via the stem cells incorporated within.

  • Scale-up manufacturing of the calcium phosphate microspheres
  • Perform experimental modelling validation of the technology
  • Develop a prototype minimally invasive delivery device
  • Conduct Health Economic evaluation of the technology proposed
  • Implement a clinical Patient Public Involvement (PPI) study to gain patient perception of the technology proposed.
